EFFICIENT MONITORING OF DAMS: LESSONS LEARNED AND NEW TRENDS

Dam monitoring is not an end in itself, but an essential component of dam safety management. An efficient monitoring program is made up of a set of independent tasks and processes specifically adapted to the characteristics of each dam and its environment, such as the foundation and slopes of the reservoir.

An efficient auscultation system requires an adequate design and focused on the detection of the specific failure modes of the work, the correct installation and start-up by specialized personnel, continuous maintenance and the validation and periodic analysis of the data obtained.

The current president of the International Dam Monitoring Committee, Louis Hattingh of South Africa, will give a lecture entitled “Risk analysis, Monitoring and Surveillance: basic tools in dam safety management”. During the conference, the latest bulletin of the ICOLD Dam Surveillance Technical Committee will be presented, which includes 80 practical cases with experiences from more than 20 countries, allowing valuable lessons to be drawn, both for young and veteran engineers. Other interventions will focus on the application of new technologies for monitoring prey.
